As a garden designer, Jackie can work with you in a number of ways – adapting to your timeframe, needs,
dreams and budget. Naturally, design proposals will also take into account the existing features and potential of your site
and its immediate surroundings.
The process will probably begin with a chat over the phone – when you outline what you’d like to
achieve. If you feel there’s some common ground, Jackie can then arrange an initial consultation meeting with you to
see the garden and get an idea of the scope of the project.
That initial consultation meeting will last up to an hour, and will be followed up with an outline proposal
and costings for the project. If you agree to these, the design work will begin.
Designs might involve a new layout of the front or back garden, an aspect of the garden, or a planting scheme
for the existing structures. You might also require new lighting, furniture and other garden accessories or structures.
Whatever options you choose, Jackie will begin with a more detailed visit to the site. This will involve measuring
and recording the garden, and weighing up the different uses to which your garden is or can be put. An essential factor is
how you move around the site, where you most like to relax (indoors and out), store stuff, exercise, entertain - or perhaps
take refuge from children or neighbours!
An outline plan will map out the new garden layout, with some illustrations to show how the space will
work, what it will look like, and some suggestions for materials or plants. When you’ve discussed the options and agreed
any changes, Jackie will draw up a detailed masterplan. She will probably also need to prepare sections and plans with
specifications of materials and construction details. These are scale drawings from which a contractor or fabricator
can work, to build the site and any customised elements included in the design.
After this comes the soil preparation and planting. This procedure will vary, depending on whether you want
a naturalised wildflower meadow, architectural plants in containers, a woodland zone, a herbaceous border, hedging or other
types of green screens, and so on. Jackie will work out the planting plan and schedule. She is also able to supply high
quality plants, and do the planting.
Finally,
for your long-term enjoyment and the health of your growing garden, she can prepare a month-by-month maintenance schedule.
