When somebody purchases your home they're not simply acquiring the house or an apartment within the building, but
also the garden.
Garden design is an investment that lasts. Kitchens
date, as do bathrooms. But elegant garden design stands out as it matures.
Jackie designs not only for house owners and long term leaseholders,
but also for people who own the freehold share or leasehold of flats. This applies to garden or basement flats with sole
responsibility for the garden, as well as flats where the ownership and use of the garden are shared. The practice works
with individuals or groups to reach a common view and create a garden to be enjoyed by all. One example is a decision by
the owners of five flats in a north London house to club together and commission a planting scheme for the front garden -
which they all walk past and look onto everyday. Depending on the size of the garden, there is a range of design possibilities
for designating social, private and functional spaces required by the various occupants of the property.
As a design practice, the Extra Room has spoken with
many estate agents. They comment on how frequently potentially attractive properties are let down by poor gardens (especially
the communal areas of those large houses divided into leasehold flats). The agents know this because such properties stay
on their books for a long time, resulting in negotiations with the owners to drop their asking prices.
That is, unless someone takes the plunge to invest
in a garden designer ....
